NOTE TO SELF
Use Google spreadsheet for the purpose of having parents sign in at "meet the teacher night". I'm always cursing myself for not gathering this information when it is most convenient at the beginning of the school year.
SEARCHING 101 As for the research portion of the Google search, type in a search-topic and press the "I'm feeling Lucky" button to find the best site. If that doesn't meet your needs, try the options area on the left of your screen. Start by clicking on wonder-wheel to see a web of related sites to the search that you've typed. This is especially helpful for student who are having trouble finding the exact phrasing that they need for a good search. The next item to try under options is the timeline. The timeline will give a list of frequently searched sites during specific dates. Ask students to analyze the information and try and figure why certain days had more searches for the topic than other dates. Ask about what was going on in history at the time. ADVANCED SEARCHING Why search with the extention .edu? Typically this site is a higher education site and might be considered a more reliable source. Teachers can use this to search material for their own knowledge. TRANSLATION Try this with a web page. Click on language tools and then put the url into the translate a web page. This would be helpful when you have a student or parent that wants to use a site in the native language, but can't because of the language barrier. I could have used this for a student who read fluently in Arabic but wasn't able to keep up with the other kids. She has subsequently move to an ELL school and I can share this with her teacher.
