FINAL PROJECT

TOP 10 LIST

1.  Google Spreadsheet- Helpful as a classroom management tool.  It would work great to collect parent/student info at the beginning of the year and then use later for class party sign ups or volunteer forms.
2.  Google Search (Wonder Wheel)- If the "I'm feeling lucky" button doesn't do the trick for finding information, I would encourage my students to use the wonder wheel (within show options/ standard view) to help them think of different ways to phrase their search.
3.  Google Search Window Tips-  My students could use the (define: ________)  to help them understand the key vocabulary words in their weekly story.
4.  Google Images/ FLICKR/ Creative Commons-  Use this for searching for photos to represent concepts in geometry
5.  Google Squared-  I would use this to show my kids how they could search a broad topic such as famous Missourians and get a list of ideas to choose from for more in-depth study.
6.  Google Books-  This tool could allow students to preview a book or show the cover of selected pages of a book that they are reading to other students as part of a book trailer.
7.  Custom Search Engine-  This could be used to narrow a search for math sites that are grade appropriate.
8.  Voicethread-  This web 2.0 tool would allow students to comment on story elements related to their weekly story.
9.  Wordle-  I would have students use this to write adjectives that describe everything about themselves. The other students could try to guess the person that goes with the poster.
10.  Toondoo-  Students could use this as a way to demonstrate understanding of almost any concept taught in the core subjects.

LESSON 1

Grade level: 4th
Subject: Reading
Equipment needed: Computer with internet access

Objectives:
CA 2, 3, 1.5 Students will develop vocabulary through text, using an online definition tool.

Instructional activities:
First, students will identify six "tricky" words in their weekly story.  Then they will use the Google search window and the type define: "__________"  in the window to retrieve the definition.  Students will go to Google images and click on advance image search in order to change the filtering to strict.  Students will proceed to search pictures in Google images that represent the tricky word.
Note-     A mini-lesson on crediting the images using the url that links to the image source should be taught at this point.
The last task for the vocabulary lesson will be to place the words and images into a blog page set up by the teacher that includes the stories title.  This resource will be used as a mini glossary by the class as they read and comprehend the text.

Websites used:
Blogger-  http://www.blogspot.com/

Description of websites used:
-  The following websites are tied to the Google search engine and are designed to make searching easy and efficient
-  For students I would recommend removing the nav bar on Blogger so that they don't use the "next blog" feature and end up finding inappropriate material.  Edublogs is an alternative blog that may work better.

Evaluation:
Checklist:
___/6 pts. six "tricky" words
___/6 pts. six pictures that match the sentiment of each word
___/6 pts. urls that identify the source of the picture
___/18 pts. all words/ pictures and credits are posted in one post on the blog
___/4 pts.  strict filtering used at all times when searching images
___/10 pts. helpful and responsible internet behavior is displayed in the lab
___/50 pts. total

Extension:
Students use the pictures and the words to make an interactive matching game using Notebook software.

LESSON 2

Grade level: 4th
Subject: Reading
Equipment needed:  Internet access, computer for every student, student email for Google log-in

Objectives:
CA 2, 1.5, 1.6, 2.4
Use details from text to identify setting, character traits, problems and solutions, and story events

Instructional activities:
Prior to this lesson, students will have participated in the following interactive activity to review the concept of story elements.

First,  students will read their weekly story and identify, by "sticky noting", the story element in their text.  After they have identified as many story elements as possible, they will  fill in a story element plan (see linked picture below) that will assist them in creating a power point presentation using Google docs.   Once in the lab, students work with a partner to create a power point with a title page and at least five slides that are organized to show the story elements.  Each student will be responsible for creating and peer editing slides until the project is complete.
Note-  watch this simple You-tube video to explain the basics of Google docs and prepare to teach a mini "how-to" about Google docs before asking students to create the shared power point.

Google docs- http://docs.google.com/present/edit?id=dgtk23h2_205f3n8mqhs
You tube video- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRqUE6IHTEA

Description of websites used:
The interactive story elements website serves as an online tutorial for students to review the elements of a story.
The fccr site is a reading research site that provides many graphic organizers related to all areas of reading, including comprehension in this case.
The Google docs presentation tool is an online tool that allows multiple people to share and edit a document at the same time.
The You-tube video explains the purpose of online documents and the basics of creating an online sharable document using Google docs

Evaluation:
Checklist:
___/ 5pts.  Five or more story elements identified with sticky notes
___/ 10pts.  Graphic Organizer complete and easy to read
___/ 10pts.  Power point (title page and five slides that include the story elements)
___/  5pts.  Cooperation and Participation with Google docs powerpoint activity
___/ 30pts. total

Extension:
-Students present powerpoints to the class using a lcd projector or SMART board.
-Students can use Google images to find a pictures of their book to upload to Voice thread.  They can use this picture to create a slide that includes a comment on one of the story elements. Students can add comments to other student's voice threads.
